چکیده

In this thesis I will examine the relations between turbulence as found in physical systems and turbulence in optic ow elds. I will record some image sequences of a theoretically well understood turbulent physical system and from these image sequences I will examine the relations between the optic ow of the image sequences and the physical parameters of the turbulent system. I will examine the image sequences at di erent scales using the theory of linear Gaussian scale-space, because linear Gaussian scale-space has proven to be a valuable tool in digital image processing and because the physics of turbulence can be explained through scaling properties of the turbulent ow. From these analyses I hope to be able to describe the theoretical relations between turbulence in optic ow elds and turbulence in physical systems. I have obtained the permission to borrow and use equipment and experimental setup for the recording of the image sequences by Preben Alstr m and Mogens Levinsen from the Niels Bohr Institute (NBI). This abstract is a translated version of the description of the project (\Arbejdsbeskrivelse"), delivered to the administration of DIKU at the start of this project.

Mathematical Simulation for the Effects of Flow Control Devices in a Six- strand Tundish in Continuous Casting of Steel Billet

The method of continuous casting of steel is now often used in the metallurgical industry, due to the increasing demand for the production of high – quality steel. An important device of continuous casting machine is the tundish, in which a stabilized steel flow has a crucial effect on the quality and efficiency conditions of the continuous casting process. In this study fluid flows in a six – ...

Resolution requirements for aero-optical simulations

Analytical criteria are developed to estimate the error of aero-optical computations due to inadequate spatial resolution of refractive index fields in high Reynolds number flow simulations. The unresolved turbulence structures are assumed to be locally isotropic and at low turbulent Mach number. Based on the Kolmogorov spectrum for the unresolved structures, the computational error of the opti...

A Total-Variation Regularized Optical Flow Approach to Computing Density Dynamics and Transport Study

Classical optical flow techniques were developed for computing virtual motion fields between two images of the same scene, assuming conservation of intensity and a smoothness of the flow field. If these assumptions are dropped, similar techniques can be used to compute apparent flows between time snapshots of data that do not come from images, even if these flows are turbulent and divergent. In...

Turbulent Drag Reduction by Spanwise Wall Oscillations

The objective of this paper is to examine the effectiveness of wall oscillation as a control scheme of drag reduction. Two flow configurations are considered: constant flow rate and constant mean pressure gradient. The Navier-Stokes equations are solved using Fourier-Chebyshev spectral methods and the oscillation in sinusoidal form is enforced on the walls through boundary conditions for the sp...

Study of Clear Air Turbulence over Iranian Plato

This study was carried out using two sets of numerical weather forecast data and flight reports for Clear Air Turbulence (CAT) over Iranian Plato to find atmospheric flow patterns favorable to the formation of CAT. The numerical data include five months of AVN analysis with horizontal resolution of 1 degree(about 100 km) and four months forecast data of MM5 model with resolution of 50 km. Impor...
